Light and Dark - What It Really Means

Posted by [email protected] on November 21, 2011 at 2:50 AM

So often I hear the words " I am a White Witch", or "That's Black Magick" and those phrases make me cringe. A very wise woman by the name of Evelyn Paglini once said  "it is not the magick, it is the person or their intent".
What this means to me is that what one person may perceive as something "good" may be perceived as "bad" to another.

Light and Dark are not so easily defined. I have had many  tell me they are always  positive - never anything negative, that negativity is not allowed, that they have no dark side, to which I usually reply  "what drugs are you on?"

Now I know that sounds a bit quip, but I can assure you 100% total happiness, positivity and good intentions are simply not possible 100% of the time. Not to mention the plain and simple fact that if we had no knowledge of something dark, even if it is simply in our own concept, we would have no sense of something good or light either. You must have balance.

I guess what I am really getting at here is that people must have duality, and in that we often try to escape from anything labled as "dark". But Dark is not such a negative concept. Even if one would wish to label their working as "harmful vs beneficial"  there are things to consider. Here we go back to the  "what is good for one may not hold true for another", as well as the entire concept of not infringing on another person's free will.

To retreat into your dark side can also mean to retreat into a place of quiet comtemplation, thoughtfulness, deeper connections and rest. We have the dark time of the year, usually fall and winter, the time the Earth and many of her creatures are at rest. We have the Dark of the Moon, a time for comtemplative magicks, and banishing of personal negativity. So dark does not equal bad. It is nothing to be feared.
As for those "Black or Dark Magick" workings, as I said in the beginning, what is good to one person may be bad to another - that is the beauty of individuality.

So before you judge another because they gravitate towards their preferred method of spirituality or magick, think about the times you may have been in the very same place. We all need to connect to both sides in order to understand ourselves. One of the truest phrases I have ever heard,  "Know Thyself", and that means all the parts of yourself.

A good example of this concept is found in nature and is the honey bee~its markings are both light & dark, they spiral through infinity together. This combination can be found over & over. Whether they exist in harmony is the question & worth studying.
